Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Alex Lowry joins Motherwell on loan

Wycombe Wanderers have confirmed that midfielder Alex Lowry will spend the 2026/27 season on loan at Motherwell. The 23-year-old leaves Adams Park after 18 months with the Chairboys, where he made 34 appearances and scored three goals since arriving from Rangers in January 2025. League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 11th in League One, 63 pts, 17W-12D-17L from 46 games, recent form WLLDL.

Lowry, who has not featured for Wycombe in 2026, played his last game for the club in the 4-0 Boxing Day defeat at Luton Town. His final outing came just days before the January 2025 transfer window reopened, when he arrived from Rangers. The move marks a return to Scotland for Lowry, who began his career at the Ibrox club at the age of 10.

What the Motherwell boss said about Lowry

Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson described the signing as a strong addition to his squad. He praised Lowry’s technical ability, creativity, and knowledge of Scottish football. Johansson said: "We see this as a great opportunity for Alex and the club. He is a technically gifted footballer who enjoys being on the ball and being creative. His knowledge of Scottish football and experience here could prove vital over the next 12 months." The Swede added that the club’s scouting team had been meticulous in their assessment of Lowry.

Lowry himself spoke of his excitement at returning to Scotland. He said: "It's great to be back up the road. Being a Scottish football fan, everyone knows Motherwell were an outstanding team last year. But having spoken to the manager, it's already clear he has his own ideas for what he wants the team to look like." The midfielder believes he can contribute to a side that already has a clear identity under Johansson.

Lowry’s path from Rangers to Wycombe and back

Lowry made his Rangers first-team debut in January 2022 in the Scottish Cup, scoring against Stirling Albion. He went on to feature in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League squads, including the run to the final against Eintracht Frankfurt. An injury-hit 2022/23 season limited his chances, though he did make his Champions League debut against Ajax. He managed just seven senior appearances that campaign.

A loan spell at Hearts in the first half of 2023/24 brought 17 appearances, one goal, and four assists before injury cut the loan short. Wycombe signed him in January 2025, and now he returns to Scotland with Motherwell, whose league season kicks off on August 2. The move comes as Wycombe prepare for their League One campaign following a 11th-place finish last term with 63 points from 46 games.
