Gareth Ainsworth Reunites with Former Wycombe Midfielder Nick Freeman
Gareth Ainsworth has reunited with former Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Nick Freeman at Gillingham ahead of the 2026/27 season. Freeman has signed for the Gills as a free agent following his departure from Shrewsbury Town, where he spent the second half of last season.
What happened?
Freeman is a familiar name to Wanderers supporters after spending seven years at Adams Park, having been signed by Ainsworth from Biggleswade Town following a successful trial in 2016. During his time in Buckinghamshire, he made 178 appearances and scored nine goals, helping the Chairboys secure promotion from League Two in 2018 before playing his part in the club's historic rise to the Championship in 2020.
Why it matters for Wycombe Wanderers
Freeman's reunion with Ainsworth at Gillingham strengthens the squad ahead of the new season. The versatile midfielder, who can also operate in defence or at wing-back, impressed during a trial period at Priestfield and has now secured a permanent move.
What comes next?
Speaking to Gillingham's website, Freeman said: "I am delighted to be here and get going. It's a great group of lads and staff. I have played for the Gaffer before and he always creates a really positive environment for the lads. It was a no-brainer, to be honest."
Freeman is not the only former Chairboys player to make the switch to Kent this summer, as former Wycombe winger Kadeem Harris has also joined Gillingham, strengthening Ainsworth's squad ahead of the new campaign.
League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): Wycombe Wanderers finished 11th in League One, with 63 points from 46 games, and a recent form of WLLDL. Goals this season: 69 scored, 58 conceded (+11 goal difference). Title race: 40 points behind leaders Lincoln.
