Former Burton Albion striker Quevin Castro has died at the age of 25. His professional debut in League One came against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park in July 2022.
Quevin Castro started for Burton Albion on the opening day of the 2022-23 season. The match at Adams Park saw Wycombe Wanderers dominate early, scoring three times inside the first half-hour. David Wheeler, Anis Mehmeti, and Josh Scowen were the goalscorers in a 3-0 win for the Chairboys. Castro was substituted after 57 minutes, replaced by Jonny Smith. This single appearance for Burton, while on loan from West Bromwich Albion, marked his only League One outing.
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Castro moved to England with his family in the 2000s and was raised in East Anglia. His football journey was extensive. After time in West Bromwich Albion's academy, his senior career included a spell at Notts County in the EFL and loans to Gateshead and York City. He also played for a host of Non-League sides: Thetford Town, Mildenhall Town, Leiston, Bury Town, Norwich CBS, King's Lynn Town, Chippenham Town, Cambridge City, and Eastbourne Borough. He collapsed during a match for Portuguese side Real Massama just days after his 25th birthday.
West Bromwich Albion, Castro's former parent club, issued a statement expressing their devastation at his untimely passing. "We are devastated to learn of the untimely passing of our former player Quevin Castro," the club said. They added, "Rest in peace, Quevin." The Championship side will hold a period of applause in the 25th minute of their upcoming fixture against Burnley this Sunday as a tribute.
Wycombe Wanderers begin this week 16th in the League One table with two points from two draws. They have scored two goals and conceded two, leaving them with a zero goal difference. The team is four points behind early leaders Bradford City. Wednesday currently sit 12th, making it an important early-season test for Gareth Ainsworth's side as they look to improve their standing.
