Rob Lee has reflected on his time at Wycombe Wanderers, a spell extended by personal enjoyment but overshadowed by profound club tragedy. The former England midfielder joined on a short-term deal in February 2005 and ended up making 43 appearances, staying until he was 40.

Lee initially agreed to play until the end of that season but found he loved the experience. "I stayed until I was 40," he said, explaining his decision to remain for another year. His 36 appearances during the 2005/06 campaign came during a period of immense emotional strain for the club.

A Season of Sorrow

Two devastating events defined that season. On April 2, 2005, young defender Mark Philo died in a car accident. The tragedy occurred on the same day Wycombe won 2-0 at home against Notts County. Roughly six weeks later, Myra Gorman, the wife of manager John Gorman, passed away following a battle with cancer.

The club's form suffered in the aftermath. From that April win, Wycombe won only five of their next 21 league matches and lost ten times. Manager John Gorman, who had worked with Lee in the England set-up in the 1990s, later left his position as he was not in the right frame of mind to continue.

Lee indicated that had Gorman stayed, he would have likely remained at the club for another season. Despite the sombre backdrop, the 2005/06 season also contained moments of resilience, including a 21-match unbeaten run in League Two, though the campaign ultimately ended with play-off semi-final defeat to Cheltenham Town.

Building on Legacy

The club's current side carries its own legacy of perseverance. They currently sit 15th in the League One standings with 15 points from 12 games, a position that leaves them ten points off the division's summit. Their record of three wins, six draws and three losses this season includes a recent run of two wins, two draws and one defeat from their last five matches. This sequence includes a 1-1 draw at AFC Wimbledon last Saturday, where Fred Onyedinma scored the equaliser, and a 2-2 draw at Cambridge United the previous Tuesday, where Jayden Wareham scored twice. Their next opportunity to build momentum comes this Saturday at Adams Park in their fixture against Burton Albion. Top scorer Jayden Wareham, with five goals this term, embodies the attacking spirit Lee admired in the club's younger players during his own stint. The match against 12th-placed Burton Albion on October 31 represents a key game in a tightly packed part of the table. The team has scored 19 goals but conceded 23 so far this campaign.
