Wycombe Wanderers legend Luke O’Nien is set to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Sport this summer, recognizing his significant contributions both on and off the pitch. The award will be presented by the University of Sunderland during graduation ceremonies at The Fire Station in July. O’Nien, who is now a celebrated figure at Sunderland, began his football journey with The Chairboys, where he made a lasting impact. Joining Wycombe Wanderers in 2015 after being released by Watford, he quickly became a key player under manager Gareth Ainsworth. Over three seasons at Adams Park, O’Nien made over 100 appearances and scored 15 goals, showcasing his versatility and work ethic. His dedication was also acknowledged when he received Wycombe’s Community Player of the Season award in 2017. O’Nien played a pivotal role in the 2017/18 season, helping the club secure promotion to League One, which was a significant milestone in his career. After leaving Wycombe in July 2018 to join Sunderland, he has continued to excel, making over 300 appearances and contributing to the club's rise back to the Premier League. Reflecting on his journey, O’Nien expressed immense gratitude for the opportunities he received at Wycombe, emphasizing the importance of his time there in shaping his career.
