Wycombe Wanderers produced a stunning second-half comeback to claim a key 3-2 victory away at Leyton Orient on Saturday. The win lifts the Chairboys off the foot of the League One table, moving them up from 23rd place after a run of five games without a win.
Early promise and a setback
Jayden Wareham gave Wycombe the perfect start, finishing from close range after a clever pass from Ewan Henderson in the 13th minute. The lead lasted until the 37th minute when Jack Grimmer turned the ball into his own net under pressure, sending the teams in level at the break.
Wycombe responded immediately after the restart. In first-half stoppage time, Fred Onyedinma restored the lead, again assisted by the influential Henderson. Just two minutes into the second half, Daniel Harvie made it 3-1, firing home from Aaron Morley's delivery. Leyton Orient's Jaze Kabia pulled one back five minutes later, but Wycombe held firm.
A disciplined rearguard
Manager Michael Duff's side showed resilience to see out the game, despite collecting three yellow cards for time-wasting and fouls. Goalkeeper Craig Hazard made three important saves, while the defence limited Orient to just four shots on target from 14 attempts. The visitors also won the corner count nine to six.
Duff praised his team's character after the match. "The reaction after their equaliser was excellent," he said. "To score twice either side of half-time showed real belief. We needed that result and the performance that came with it."
The result ends a difficult start to the season for Wycombe, who had taken just three points from their opening five matches. Next up is a trip to face Wigan Athletic, who currently sit 24th, on Saturday 19 September. The full schedule is available on our fixtures page.
Wycombe will now turn their attention to the EFL Trophy, hosting Chelsea U21 at Adams Park on Tuesday 15 September. The Chairboys, who sit 19th in League One with six points, are expected to rotate their squad for the group stage fixture. They will be looking to build on the momentum from their 3-2 win at Leyton Orient.
The victory at Leyton Orient was secured under interim head coach Tom Hounsell following the sacking of Michael Duff. The win, which leaves Wycombe 19th in League One with six points, was their first in the league this season.
