Wycombe Wanderers have sacked manager Michael Duff following a winless start to the League One season. The club confirmed the departure of Duff and first-team coach Alex Morris in a statement on Monday, September 8.
Tom Hounsell has been appointed as the interim head coach. The decision ends Duff's tenure of almost exactly a year, having taken charge on September 18, 2025. The club's statement said the move was made "in light of a disappointing run of results since the spring and believes the time is right to take a new direction." Owners Dan Rice and Eduard Vyshnyakov acted swiftly, making Duff the first managerial casualty in England's top four divisions this season.
The immediate cause was a dismal opening to the 2026-27 campaign. Wycombe are currently 23rd in League One, having taken just three points from their first five matches. Their record shows zero wins, three draws, and two defeats, with a recent form of DLLDD. They have scored seven goals but conceded twelve, leaving them with a negative five goal difference. This poor league start was compounded by early exits from both the Carabao Cup, losing to Stevenage, and the EFL Trophy, where they were beaten on penalties by Reading.
Duff's second full season began with a seven-match winless run across all competitions. The club's sole victory in their last 13 games was on the final day of the previous season against Rotherham. He won 20 of his 52 matches in charge, drawing 15 and losing 17. His final game was a dramatic 3-3 draw with MK Dons, where his side surrendered a 2-0 halftime lead before new signing Jayden Wareham equalised.
Tom Hounsell steps into the breach on an interim basis. The search for a permanent successor will begin immediately, with the next appointment set to become the third manager hired since Rice and Vyshnyakov took control of the club in May 2024. The owners have been active in the transfer market, signing close to 40 players and breaking the club's transfer record at least twice. Their latest record signing, striker Jayden Wareham from Exeter City, scored on his debut last weekend.
The immediate focus shifts to the fixtures, with a tough away trip to ninth-placed Leyton Orient scheduled for Saturday, September 12. Hounsell's task is to stop the slide and find a first league win. Fans can track the team's progress in the standings as the season develops.
Duff's time at Adams Park was a story of two halves. He initially steadied the ship after replacing Michael Dodds last September, guiding Wycombe to a respectable top-half finish in the 2025-26 season. However, form collapsed from the spring onwards. The team managed only three wins in their final 18 games under his leadership. The final weeks were also marred by disciplinary issues, with the FA charging Duff with misconduct for allegedly using abusive language towards a match official after a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on September 1.
First-team coach Alex Morris, who had been at the club since October 2025, also left alongside Duff. The ownership's strategy is now under scrutiny, having hired and fired two very different head coaches since Matt Bloomfield's departure almost two years ago. The club's current predicament sees them nine points adrift of early League One leaders Sheffield Wednesday. Supporters will hope a change in the dugout can spark a rapid improvement in results and performances.
