Reading will travel to Adams Park to face Wycombe Wanderers this Saturday as scheduled, despite losing three players to international call-ups. Manager Leam Richardson decided against requesting a postponement, expressing confidence in his available squad.
"First of all, congratulations to the three lads who received international call-ups," Richardson said. "It's a fantastic achievement for them and a proud moment for the club." The players absent are Andy Rinomhota, called up by Zimbabwe for Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Jeriel Dorsett, who will represent Montserrat, and Charlie Savage, who returns to the Wales squad after making his 150th appearance for Reading.
Richardson explained the reasoning behind playing the fixture. "We considered the circumstances carefully and, on this occasion, felt it was right to play the game," he said. "Football is a squad game and we have confidence in the players available to us, while keeping the fixture in place also helps us avoid adding another game to an already busy schedule."
Wycombe, who sit 14th in League One with nine points from seven games, will be looking to extend a three-game winning run. Their last outing was a 1-0 victory at Wigan, secured by Dan Casey's 68th-minute goal. The Chairboys' recent fixtures show a strong upturn in form. Their last meeting with Reading ended in a 1-1 draw at the Select Car Leasing Stadium in August.
Reading have fewer than 100 tickets remaining for the trip to Buckinghamshire, with sales open to members holding sufficient loyalty points. The club also confirmed their following weekend's fixture against Bradford City is expected to proceed as planned. Wycombe will be aiming to close the six-point gap to league leaders Bradford, with the full standings showing the competitive nature of the division. The match kicks off at Adams Park on Saturday, 26 September.
